Malappuram: The remains of those who lost their lives in the landslides at Mundakkai and Chooralmala have been carried by the Chaliyar River to the Nilambur area of Malappuram. So far, 26 body parts have been found in the Pothukallu area near Nilambur, many of which are just fragments.
Due to the rising water levels in the Chaliyar River, residents of Kumbalappra, Karippetti, Vaniyam, and Iruttukutti Colony in the Pothukallu area were given a warning. As a result, residents stayed awake through the night, monitoring the rising water levels, which first alerted them to the landslide in Wayanad.
Around 2 a.m., the residents initially noticed gas cylinders and later logs floating down the river. They then informed more locals. From early morning, residents began searching along the riverbanks, leading to the discovery of the remains.
The first body found was that of a roughly nine-year-old child from the Kunippala area. Rescuers retrieved the body from the river. Subsequently, the remains of a woman were found from the Ambuttymuttu area, and another woman’s remains were found from Bhoothanam. The search continues in the river and the nearby forests under the leadership of the fire department, NDRF, police, volunteers, and local representatives.
