Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has stated that if the police fail to conduct a thorough investigation into the murder of a PG doctor at RG Kar Medical College, the case will be handed over to the CBI. She has instructed the state police to complete the investigation within this week. If no decision is made within a week, the case will be transferred to the CBI, Banerjee clarified. She also expressed her desire to expedite the trial of the case by transferring it to a fast-track court.

Banerjee, who spoke to the victim’s family, emphasized that if the police cannot resolve the case by Sunday, it will be handed over to the CBI. Despite the central investigative agency’s relatively low success rate, the decision remains to transfer the case to the CBI. Following a visit to the doctor’s home, Banerjee reiterated the need to quickly apprehend the suspects and indicated that if necessary, they would face the death penalty.

The female doctor, a second-year student in the Chest Medicine department, was found dead early Saturday morning. One person has been arrested in connection with the case.

In response to this murder, there has been a nationwide protest calling for justice. Demonstrations and rallies have been organized across various cities, by doctors and medical students demanding a swift and thorough investigation and stricter measures against violence in medical institutions. Protesters are urging both state and central authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice and that similar incidents are prevented in the future.
