New Delhi: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and JMM leader Champai Soren will join the BJP on August 30. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this through a post on X (formerly Twitter). Sarma also shared a picture of Soren meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah.
Since stepping down as Chief Minister in favor of Hemant Soren, Champai has distanced himself from the JMM. “This is good news for us because we were clear about Champai Soren’s intentions. If he had contested as an independent, it would have been difficult for us, as he would have drawn a significant vote share from the JMM,” sources from Hemant Soren’s camp said, reacting to the photo of Champai’s meeting with Amit Shah.
Champai Soren had assumed the role of interim Chief Minister after Hemant Soren was jailed in a corruption case. However, after Hemant Soren was released on bail, Champai had to step down from the Chief Minister’s position. Dissatisfied with being hastily removed from office, Champai Soren began making moves to join the BJP. Jharkhand is set to hold elections in November-December.
