Nipah Virus Confirmed in Malappuram: Containment Zones Established and Survey Initiated

Malappuram: A health department survey will begin today in Thiruvali, Malappuram district of Kerala where the Nipah virus has been confirmed. The survey aims to identify individuals with symptoms of the disease by inspecting homes. The health department will also release the route map of the deceased student’s journey today. The District Collector has declared wards 4, 5, 6, and 7 of Thiruvali Panchayat and the 7th ward of the neighboring Mampad Panchayat as containment zones as of yesterday. Restrictions as per Nipah protocols have been implemented in these areas. The Nabi Day procession scheduled for today in these wards will also be restricted. Masks have been made mandatory throughout Thiruvali Panchayat. The Director of the Health Department arrived in Malappuram last night to lead the operations.

A 23-year-old resident of Naduvath, Vandoor Panchayat, and a student in Bengaluru, died last Monday at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna. After observing symptoms of Nipah, a sample was sent to Kozhikode Medical College for testing.

The test results confirmed Nipah virus infection. Subsequently, a sample was sent to Pune NIV for confirmation. The young man had returned from Bengaluru on August 23. He had come home for Ayurvedic treatment for an injury sustained in Bengaluru.
