Kolkata Doctors End Protest Following Murder of Trainee Doctor

Date:

Kolkata: Doctors in Kolkata have ended their protest after 41 days, following the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the Calcutta Medical College Hospital. Junior doctors announced that they will resume essential services in hospitals starting September 21.

In light of the rape-murder case, the doctors are calling for a swift CBI investigation and will hold a rally from Swasthya Bhavan to the CBI office tomorrow at 3 PM.

“We are ending our protest here and will march to the CBI office tomorrow afternoon. The cases of murder and rape must be expedited by the CBI. Due to the flooding, we will return to work on Saturday. We will assist the public, but we will continue our sit-in across all medical colleges and ensure that all matters related to essential services are addressed,” said one of the protesting doctors.

This development follows the submission of a draft detailing key points discussed in talks with the West Bengal government to Chief Secretary Manoj Pant on Thursday. They are now awaiting the state’s response to their suggestions.

The second round of meetings between the state public healthcare task force, led by Pant, and a representative group of 30 junior doctors took place at the Nabanna state secretariat. The first round was held at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat.

West Bengal has been rocked by large-scale protests following the horrific murder of the trainee doctor and allegations of widespread corruption in government healthcare centers.
