Thiruvananthapuram: The CPM has decided that Saji Cherian does not need to resign immediately following the remarks made during a speech that allegedly insulted the Constitution. This decision was made during a meeting of the CPM State Secretariat on Friday. The State Secretariat evaluated that Saji Cherian had previously resigned on the issue in consideration of moral integrity, and the case is still under investigation. Minister P. Rajeev informed the media after the meeting that legal advice would be sought from the AG on the matter.
Meanwhile, the opposition is preparing to escalate protests demanding Saji Cherian’s resignation. Earlier, Governor Arif Mohammad Khan had made it clear that the government should decide on the minister’s resignation.
It was the previous day when the High Court ordered further investigation into the speech that allegedly insulted the Constitution. The court directed the State Crime Branch to investigate the case. It was emphasized that a truthful officer should be assigned to investigate, and the context in which terms like “Kuntham” and “Kudachakram” were used should be examined.
Saji Cherian made the controversial remarks while speaking at a CPM-organized event in Mallappally, Pathanamthitta. Following the controversial speech, Saji Cherian resigned from his ministerial post but later returned to the position.
