Prime Minister Modi Navigates Diplomatic Tightrope in Moscow Amid Ukraine Crisis

Date:

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Moscow amidst global scrutiny over the Ukraine conflict showcased India’s delicate diplomatic balancing act. On the heels of a suspected Russian missile strike on a children’s hospital in Kyiv, Modi emphasized humanitarian concerns while engaging in high-stakes talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During their discussions, Modi condemned the tragic loss of innocent lives and underscored the futility of resolving conflicts through warfare. He expressed hope for peace following a “frank” exchange with Putin, hinting at potential new approaches to the crisis.

The visit coincided with NATO’s 75th-anniversary summit in Washington DC, underscoring India’s strategic positioning between global powers amidst escalating tensions.

Despite India’s historical ties with Russia, Modi’s statements reflected a nuanced approach, highlighting India’s commitment to peace while refraining from explicit condemnation of Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The leaders affirmed their countries’ special strategic partnership and set ambitious targets to enhance bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030.

Modi’s visit, which marked his first bilateral trip to Russia since the Ukraine conflict began, culminated in him being conferred Russia’s highest civilian honor, the Order of St Andrew the Apostle, dedicated to the people of India.
