Thiruvananthapuram: Actor Mohanlal is scheduled to meet the media on Saturday afternoon in Thiruvananthapuram. This will be his first media interaction since the release of the Hema Committee report. Following the controversy surrounding the report, Mohanlal resigned from his position as president of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists) a few days ago. The 17-member executive committee was also dissolved, according to a press release.
There has been significant criticism from within AMMA regarding this decision, especially after Siddique, the former General Secretary of the organization, resigned in the wake of sexual harassment allegations made by a young actress. Siddique’s resignation followed a press conference where AMMA explained its position on the sexual allegations. The new committee assumed office after the AMMA elections held on July 30. Subsequently, the 16-member committee, excluding Siddique, also resigned. AMMA currently has 506 members.
The executive committee decided to resign during an online meeting. The explanation provided was that the resignation was due to the moral responsibility arising from the allegations.
Mohanlal’s resignation statement read:
“Following the release of the Hema Committee report and the sexual harassment allegations faced by some officials within AMMA’s executive committee, the existing executive committee is resigning to uphold its moral responsibility. A general body meeting will be convened within two months to elect a new executive committee. Until then, the existing committee will continue as a temporary arrangement to ensure that AMMA’s charitable activities and health care assistance remain unaffected, and to coordinate office operations until the general body meeting. We hope that a new leadership will come forward to renew and strengthen AMMA. Thank you to everyone who has criticized and corrected us.”
