Chennai: Dhanush has filed a lawsuit against actress Nayanthara, director Vignesh Shivan, their production company Rowdy Pictures Pvt Ltd, and the production house Wonderbar Films Pvt Ltd for the unauthorized use of clips from the movie Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the Netflix documentary. The case was considered by the Madras High Court on November 27.
During the hearing, Justice Abdul Quddos directed Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan, among others, to provide clarification regarding the allegations against them.
The documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, featuring Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan, was released on Netflix on November 18, which coincided with Nayanthara’s birthday. Before the release, Nayanthara had written an open letter to Dhanush. Dhanush’s lawyer had also sent a legal notice, threatening to take legal action against the couple for using behind-the-scenes (BTS) footage from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan without permission. In the notice, Dhanush warned that if the clips were not removed, he would demand a compensation of ₹10 crore.
Nayanthara, in her open letter, accused Dhanush of personal animosity and described him as a “dictator.” She defended the use of the BTS visuals from the film, stating that the footage, captured using personal equipment, was used in the documentary to provide context.
Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale offers a glimpse into the actress’s career, struggles, past relationships, and how she survived in a male-dominated industry filled with controversies.
