Renowned Malayalam Film Director Mohan Passes Away

Kochi: Renowned Malayalam film director Mohan has passed away at the age of 76. He died at a private hospital in Kochi. He had been in critical condition following a brain hemorrhage about a year ago.

Mohan also wrote the scripts for Angane Oru Avadhikkalam, Mukham, Shruti, Alolam, and Vidaparayum Munpe.

He completed his pre-degree studies at Irinjalakuda Christ College and was initially interested in photography. His introduction to filmmaking came through his father’s friend, director M. Krishnan Nair. Mohan worked as an assistant to notable figures like Thikkurissi Sukumaran Nair, A. B. Raj, Madhu, and P. Venu, gaining experience in various aspects of filmmaking. He served as the first assistant director in Hariharan’s Rajahamsam. Innocent, who started with small roles in Mohan’s films, later became a producer for Mohan’s projects. Mohan is considered one of the leading directors of the golden era of Malayalam cinema in the 1980s.

In May 2023, during a screening of the documentary M. Krishnan Nair – A Life in Black and White at the Thykoodam Surya Ganesh Hall in Thiruvananthapuram, Mohan collapsed on stage due to a brain hemorrhage.

His last film, The Campus, released in 2005, was notable for its story, script, and dialogue written by Cheriyan Kalpakavadi. Angane Oru Avadhikkalam was released in 1999, featuring actors like Srinivasan, Samyuktha Varma, and Mukesh. Other notable films directed by him include Sakshyam, Rachana, Niram Marunna Nimishangal, Mangalam Nerunnu, and Kochu Kochu Thettukal.
