Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami Achieves Resounding Victory

Date:

Srinagar: In a remarkable triumph, Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami of the CPI(M) has secured a resounding victory in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. This marks the fifth consecutive win for Tarigami in Kulgam.

During his election campaign, Tarigami highlighted the injustices faced by Jammu and Kashmir under the central BJP government. His main opponents were independent candidate Syed Ahmad Rashi and PDP’s Muhammad Amin Dhar. Rashi contested as an independent following the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami, which has formed a shadow alliance with the BJP in the constituency.

Tarigami first won from Kulgam in 1996 and has repeated his success in 2002, 2008, and 2014. Following the revocation of Kashmir’s special status in 2019, he was placed under house arrest for several months. With permission from the Supreme Court, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury visited Tarigami at his home to raise awareness about the plight of Kashmiris. Once in Delhi, Tarigami actively advocated for the restoration of both Kashmir’s special status and its statehood, drawing national attention. In the last election held in 2014, Tarigami defeated PDP’s Naseer Ahmad Lavey, marking his fourth term as an MLA.
