Malappuram: A young man who was undergoing treatment for fever in Malappuram has tested positive for the Nipah virus. The 23-year-old from Nadavath in Vandoor Panchayat, who was a student in Bengaluru, died last Monday at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna. After observing Nipah’s symptoms, a sample was sent for testing to the Kozhikode Medical College. The test results confirmed Nipah virus infection. The sample was then sent to the NIV in Pune for confirmation. The young man had returned to his hometown from Bengaluru on August 23, seeking Ayurvedic treatment for an injury. During this time, he developed a fever. Initially admitted to a private hospital in Vandoor, he was transferred to the Perinthalmanna hospital on the 5th of this month due to persistent fever. He passed away while receiving treatment. The deceased’s home is only 10 kilometers away from Chembraisseri, where a ninth-grade student had previously died from Nipah.

Meanwhile, the number of people on the Nipah contact list has risen to 151 from 26. With the increase in the contact list, the Thiruvali Panchayat has made wearing masks mandatory. Starting tomorrow, additional fever surveys will commence in the Panchayat.
