New Delhi: The Supreme Court has stated that no part of the country should be referred to as Pakistan. This observation came while reviewing suo motu actions taken against Karnataka High Court Judge V. Shreeshanand. The Supreme Court concluded the proceedings after accepting Justice Shreeshanand’s public apology.
“No one should refer to any part of the country as Pakistan. Such remarks are against the integrity of the nation. If remarks are made against a particular community, accusations of bias will arise. There are concerns regarding such statements,” clarified a five-member bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. Other members of the bench included Justices Sanjiv Khanna, B.R. Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy.
The Supreme Court took suo motu action following the emergence of footage in which Justice Shreeshanand referred to a locality in western Bengaluru as ‘Pakistan.’ The court also sought a report from the High Court Registrar General on the matter. The bench reviewed a report stating that the judge had publicly apologized on Wednesday. Subsequently, after considering the judge’s apology, the Supreme Court decided that no further actions were necessary in the matter.
