Thiruvananthapuram: Prabir Purkayastha, founder and editor of the news portal NewsClick, has sounded the alarm about the newly proposed Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill. He warns that this bill has the potential to severely limit digital media freedom and hinder independent journalism.
He has also criticized the Centre’s alleged plans to extend government control over digital platforms, which he believes would lead to a troubling infringement on free expression in the country.
The senior journalist Prabir was delivering the 23rd N.Narendran Memorial lecture on the topic ”Emergence and relevance of alternative media in Indian democracy” at the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club on Thursday.
He emphasized, “Never limit the spirit of expression to ‘social media.’ It transcends that term with the purpose of communicating freely, without being bound by restrictive rules.” He further noted that while mainstream media has historically wielded power over the public, digital media now empowers the people, providing information and observing their reactions to achieve meaningful outcomes.
“‘The media can no longer test the sudden passions of readers who have gained the power to dictate their preferences. It is time for the mainstream media to stop asserting its influence, as its appeal is no longer exciting”‘, he said
Prabir opined that the term “Mainstream Media” can no longer dominate or define the ‘DNA’ of its audience. We have entered an era where journalists, driven by their commitment and enthusiasm, must boldly pursue their mission, overcoming any hesitation. The era of control is over, and the definitions of “mainstream media” can no longer withstand the growing significance of digital media, which now leads the way in our rapidly evolving world.
Ironically, media organizations today seem more focused on generating revenue through advertisements than on their primary mission of revealing truths to inform and engage the public in nation-building.
What makes digital media so compelling is its humor, music, and creativity, which make storytelling more engaging and influential compared to mainstream media. The latter often lacks these dynamic features that captivate and retain audience interest.
“Economically, digital media holds an advantage over mainstream media due to its lower cost structure. People are continually exploring new platforms beyond Facebook and YouTube, making regulation increasingly complex”
Ending his speech with a quote from poet P.B. Shelley, “Ye are many but they are few,” Purkayastha underscored the power and potential of digital media in challenging and redefining the traditional media paradigm.
