Jhansi: A fire broke out at Maharani Laxmibai Medical College Hospital in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh leading to the tragic death of around 10 newborns. The fire occurred in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) of the hospital. Initial reports suggest that the cause of the fire was a short circuit. District Magistrate of Jhansi, Avinash Kumar, informed the media that the fire broke out between 10:30 PM and 10:45 PM.
The NICU is divided into two sections: the outer unit and the inner unit. The fire occurred in the inner unit, where critically ill newborns were being treated. “Most of the babies in the outer unit are safe. However, 10 babies in the inner unit lost their lives. Many others were rescued, and rescue operations are still ongoing,” the District Magistrate said.
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has directed that a two-member inquiry committee, including the Commissioner and the DIG, be formed to investigate the incident and report back to him.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, calling it “extremely tragic and heartbreaking.” He also directed the district administration and relevant officials to carry out relief and rescue operations swiftly.
