Congress Writes to President Seeking Urgent Intervention in Manipur Crisis

Date:

Delhi: In light of the escalating conflict in Manipur, Congress has written a letter to the President urging for immediate intervention. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in the letter submitted to President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday, called for the protection of the lives and property of the citizens of Manipur and stressed the need for urgent action in the matter. Kharge stated that the people of Manipur would be able to live safely and peacefully in their homes if the President intervened in the situation. He also highlighted the complete failure of both the central and state governments to maintain law and order in the state over the past 18 months.

“People in the state have lost trust in both governments. Every passing day, the people of Manipur are becoming more vulnerable in their own land. Infants and women are being mercilessly killed,” Kharge wrote. “They have received no help from the governments. They have been completely isolated and helpless for over 540 days. They have lost faith in both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister.”

“The conflict has already claimed the lives of over a hundred people, including women and children. Nearly a lakh have been displaced and rendered homeless. The suffering of the people continues,” Kharge added. He also pointed out that the crisis has affected the state’s economy and the livelihoods of its people, with inflation likely to rise by up to 10 percent.

Kharge further mentioned that despite requests from the people of Manipur, the Prime Minister has not visited the state. In contrast, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha has visited Manipur three times in the last 18 months. Kharge expressed that the Prime Minister’s refusal to visit the state was beyond understanding and added this to the letter.
