New Delhi: Delhi Minister and senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kailash Gehlot has resigned from both the party and his position in the cabinet. Gehlot, who held the portfolios of Transport, IT, and Women and Child Welfare in the Delhi government, handed over his resignation letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. His resignation comes just months before the upcoming Delhi Legislative Assembly elections.

The resignation follows internal issues within the party, with Gehlot, who held key positions such as Transport, Law, and Revenue, stepping down from his roles. Gehlot also resigned from the primary membership of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In his resignation letter, he addressed party national convener Arvind Kejriwal, citing “embarrassing controversies” and raising doubts about whether he still believes in AAP’s ideology.

In the letter, Gehlot pointed out that the Delhi government has largely spent its time battling with the central government, which has prevented real progress in the capital. He expressed that he no longer sees a way forward within AAP, stating that stepping away from the party was the only option. Gehlot concluded by resigning from his primary membership of AAP.

Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh accused Mr Gehlot of reading the script of BJP.

Mr Kejriwal has maintained silence on the resignation. At a press conference to welcome former BJP MLA Anil Jha to AAP, Mr Kejriwal was asked about Mr Gehlot’s sudden resignation.

But the former Chief Minister refused to respond, passing the mic to senior party leader Durgesh Pathak, who was sitting next to him. Mr Pathak said Kailash Gehlot was being questioned and raided by the ED and Income Tax Department for several months. Other party leaders had not minced words, saying openly that Mr Gahlot could not withstand the pressure and decided to go with the flow.
