Hathras stampede: Bhole Baba, in his first public response, says he is ‘deeply distressed’

New Delhi: The preacher whose latest sermon ended in a deadly stampede said on the morning of July 6 that he was “deeply distressed” in his first public response to the disaster.

The former police officer-turned-spiritual leader has not appeared before the public, while seven others involved in staging the event have been arrested.

On the terrace of his ashram Bhole Baba a police constable-turned-preacher and spiritual mentor, is displayed.

The preacher whose latest sermon that culminated in a deadly stampede killing as many as 121 devotees, said on July 6 morning he was “deeply distressed” in his first public response after the disaster.

Bhole Baba’s prayer meeting at Hathras, in Uttar Pradesh on July 2 saw the deaths of 121 people, the vast majority women, after a rush to the exits among the 250,000 devotees who came to watch him preach.
