New Delhi: India has strongly criticized Canada’s decision to block the broadcast of the Australia Today outlet, which aired Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar’s press conference in Canberra, hours after it was transmitted. The move was described by India as “surprising” and a reflection of Ottawa’s hypocrisy when it comes to freedom of expression.
Yesterday, the Australian news outlet, a major source for the Indian community, broadcast a joint press conference between S. Jaishankar and Australian counterpart Penny Wong in Canberra.
“We understand that the social media handles and pages of this particular outlet, a significant diaspora channel, were blocked and are no longer available to viewers in Canada. This occurred just an hour or a few hours after the publication of the article. We find it strange that this happened following Jaishankar’s press conference with Penny Wong,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Ranjit Jaiwal said during a media briefing in Delhi.
