Kolkata: During a mega ‘Martyrs’ Day’ rally in Kolkata amidst heavy rain, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the ongoing violence in Bangladesh and extended a humanitarian offer to shelter those affected. She stated that while she cannot comment on Bangladesh’s internal affairs, if people from Bangladesh seek refuge in Bengal due to violence, her government would shelter them, citing UN resolutions on refugee rights.

Bangladesh has recently faced turmoil with a strict curfew imposed nationwide and military patrols in Dhaka following violent protests over government job allocations, resulting in over 40 deaths and numerous injuries.

Banerjee also expressed solidarity with Bengal residents concerned about relatives caught in the violence and promised support. Additionally, she praised Akhilesh Yadav, leader of the Samajwadi Party, for their electoral performance in Uttar Pradesh and predicted the imminent collapse of the current central government, criticizing its stability and methods of governance.

Akhilesh Yadav, echoing Banerjee’s sentiments, highlighted the BJP’s setbacks in Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, suggesting that the central government’s days in power are numbered.

The rally underscored Banerjee’s proactive stance on humanitarian issues and her critique of the central government’s policies and actions.
