Opposition Leaders Criticize Modi’s Independence Day Speech as Divisive and Uninspiring

Date:

New Delhi: Opposition leaders condemned, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday for his Independence Day speech, criticizing it as crippled to unite and inspire the nation ignoring pressing issues

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera questioned Modi’s effectiveness as the “custodian of Hindus,” asking what measures he has taken to protect Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. Khera challenged Modi’s call for a uniform civil code, suggesting that his actions do not align with his rhetoric.

D. Raja, general secretary of the Communist Party of India, criticized Modi’s address from the Red Fort on India’s 78th Independence Day, saying it lacked themes to unite and inspire the nation. Raja claimed Modi’s speech mirrored the RSS’s divisive agenda and failed to address India’s diversity and plurality, focusing instead on a uniform approach.

Raja also highlighted the omission of any response to the Hindenburg Research report allegations, questioning the government’s commitment to making India an economic superpower by 2047. He emphasized that ensuring free and fair elections should be a priority.

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Manoj Jha expressed disappointment that Modi continues to represent only his supporters rather than all citizens. Jha criticized Modi’s approach as narrow and suggested that his mention of a secular civil code requires genuine commitment, which he feels is missing.

Jha further stated that Modi’s rhetoric on a “Viksit Bharat” and his portrayal of some people as seeking destruction seemed politically motivated rather than sincerely addressing the nation’s issues. Jha believes that Modi’s approach to secularism lacks depth and broad-mindedness.

Annie Raja, general secretary of the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) and a CPI leader, also questioned the concept of ‘One Nation One Election,’ casting doubt on the government’s ability to manage elections effectively and meet its ambition for 2047.
