Port Blair to be Renamed ‘Shri Vijaypuram’ as Part of BJP’s Colonial Legacy Removal Campaign

Date:

Andaman: The BJP government’s renaming campaign has now reached Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The central government has announced that Port Blair’s name will be changed to “Shri Vijaypuram.” Since coming to power, the BJP government has renamed numerous places and airports.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated in a press release that the renaming of Port Blair is aimed at freeing the country from colonial legacies. He added that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands hold a unique place in India’s freedom struggle and history.

“Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of freeing the country from colonial legacies, we have decided to rename Port Blair to Shri Vijaypuram. The previous name has colonial connotations. Shri Vijaypuram symbolizes the victory achieved in our struggle for independence and the unparalleled contribution of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands,” Amit Shah asserted.
