Putin Agrees to Modi’s Plea: Indian Recruits in Russian Military to Return

Date:

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to a request by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow Indian citizens serving in the Russian military and wishing to return home from the war front in Ukraine to be discharged. This decision, reportedly influenced by Modi’s direct intervention, follows weeks of diplomatic discussions between Indian and Russian officials.

Sources indicate that the discharge process is expected to commence within weeks from various deployment locations of Indian recruits. The issue gained prominence after concerns were raised about the recruitment practices that lured Indian men with promises of lucrative salaries and residency papers.

Efforts by the Indian Embassy in Moscow and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar have been pivotal in addressing this issue, with Modi highlighting the matter during recent talks with Putin. The Indian government has emphasized the safe return of all Indian military recruits involved.

The decision is seen as a gesture of goodwill towards India, reflecting longstanding bilateral ties and the personal rapport between Putin and Modi. This was evident during a private dinner hosted by Putin for Modi, where they discussed various issues and shared moments of camaraderie.

This development underscores ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the situation and ensure the welfare of Indian citizens caught up in international conflicts.
