Thiruvananthapuram: The Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M.R. Ajith Kumar has withdrawn his previously granted leave. The leave, which was approved for four days starting from Saturday, was requested for personal reasons to spend time with his family. However, Ajith Kumar submitted a request to the Home Department to cancel his leave, citing reasons against taking it.
The withdrawal of Ajith Kumar’s leave follows a series of actions by the police force in Malappuram. The controversy around Ajith Kumar escalated after PV Anwar’s allegations and the ADGP’s earlier meeting with RSS leaders. Anwar had alleged that Ajith Kumar was a notorious criminal.
Anwar further accused Ajith Kumar of seeking leave to destroy evidence and claimed that the Chief Minister’s office was protecting him. Anwar also targeted the political secretary. CPI, which is part of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), indirectly criticized the Chief Minister’s office for shielding Ajith Kumar.
Crucial LDF Meeting
With allegations against Ajith Kumar, including his meeting with RSS leaders, causing dissatisfaction among coalition partners, an LDF meeting is scheduled today in Thiruvananthapuram. The meeting, to be held at the AKG Center at 3 PM, will discuss the stance of CPI and RJD on replacing Ajith Kumar. Following Anwar’s allegations in Malappuram, the district’s SPs and DYSPs have been transferred.
The Chief Minister is expected to inform the meeting that the government will take necessary actions after reviewing the allegations. There is internal disagreement within the CPI(M) over the Chief Minister’s lenient approach towards Ajith Kumar. Today’s meeting is significant as it follows the removal of E.P. Jayarajan from the convenor position and the appointment of T.P. Ramakrishnan as the Left Democratic Front convenor.
Meanwhile, a government order issued yesterday announced a reshuffle in the police department. C.H. Nagaraju has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police, and Shyam Sundar has been appointed as the IG of the South Zone. Shyam Sundar, who is currently the Commissioner of Police in Kochi, will continue in his role as the Crime Branch IG. Despite transfers of all officials involved in PV Anwar’s allegations, ADGP Ajith Kumar remains unchanged.
