Wayanad: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi for financial support for the rehabilitation of those affected by the landslides in Wayanad and for assistance to combat climate change. The Chief Minister presented Kerala’s needs to the Prime Minister during his visit to the disaster area. After explaining the extent of the disaster, the Chief Minister also handed over a written memorandum. A detailed assessment of the damage is ongoing, with preliminary estimates indicating losses amounting to thousands of crores. The Chief Minister clarified that the state will submit a comprehensive report on the disaster to the central government later.
The impact of global warming and climate change has significantly affected the state, resulting in unpredictable natural disasters. This year’s summer heat is unprecedented in Kerala’s history, and the sudden extreme landslides are a direct consequence of climate change. Kerala needs adequate preparations to handle such unexpected natural upheavals caused by climate change.
In this context, the Chief Minister requested the Prime Minister to establish special centers and advanced regional offices of research institutions such as the Geological Survey of India, the India Meteorological Department, the National Seismic Center, and the Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services in the state. Modern systems for climate monitoring need to be set up.
Expressing gratitude for the Prime Minister’s visit to Wayanad, the Chief Minister requested that the central government’s relevant departments collaborate with the state government considering the extent of the disaster. The state needs adequate financial support for rapid reconstruction and long-term measures to combat climate change.
The Chief Minister also requested that the landslides in Wayanad be declared an extreme disaster and a national disaster as soon as possible, taking into account the extent and impact of the disaster.
