Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has stated that the goal is to find a safe location and build a special township for the rehabilitation of disaster-affected people in Wayanad. The township is aimed to be completed quickly. A special location will be identified for this purpose. Alternative arrangements will be made for Vellarmala School. The minister also mentioned that children’s education will not be disrupted.
The Chief Minister said that the rescue operations in the Wayanad landslide are in the final stages. The search continues in the Chaliyar River as well. It is very difficult to identify the body parts recovered from Chaliyar. 148 bodies have been identified and handed over to relatives. The remaining 68 unidentified bodies will be cremated in a public cemetery with interfaith prayers.
A total of 215 bodies have been recovered, including 87 women, 98 men, and 30 children. 206 people are still missing. 10,042 people are staying in 93 relief camps, and 81 are hospitalized with injuries. 1,419 people are involved in the rescue operations. The Chief Minister said that efforts were made at every stage to save as many lives as possible and that the aim was to rescue anyone with even a single heartbeat.
The Chief Minister also stated that the cause of the Wayanad disaster will be thoroughly investigated. The meteorological center has been directed to formulate a warning model and to develop predictive tools. He assured that these measures would be implemented urgently.
