Government Decides to Revamp Medisep Health Insurance Scheme

Date:

Thiruvananthapuram: The government has decided to overhaul the Medisep health insurance scheme for government employees in response to widespread criticism. A committee of experts has been appointed to study how to implement the scheme more effectively while correcting existing flaws. The contract with the administering body, Oriental Insurance Company, is set to expire next June. Previously, several large hospitals had withdrawn from the scheme. The second phase of the implementation will be based on the criticisms received.

Dr. Sreeram Venkitaramanan will chair the committee, which will review and revise the treatment packages and rates.

The LDF government introduced the Medisep scheme on July 1, 2022, promising free specialized treatment for 3 million individuals, including government employees, pensioners, and their families. While the scheme progressed well in its first year, it faced significant backlash thereafter, primarily over allegations of exploitation in the name of treatment packages.

The committee will provide recommendations on how to implement the scheme more beneficially in light of the criticisms raised. The government aims to regain the lost trust of employees by revising the packages and treatment rates.
