Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution urging the central government to provide immediate assistance to Wayanad, which has been severely affected by landslides. The assembly expressed disappointment over the lack of support so far and called for loans to be sanctioned.
Responding to the discussion on the adjournment motion, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed hope that the central government would provide aid. He described the disaster in Wayanad as unprecedented and noted that various departments have worked in coordination to assist. Essential supplies were arranged for the disaster-affected individuals, and infrastructure was set up.
The Chief Minister mentioned that cleanliness drives were carried out in the areas affected by the disaster and rescue operations. All identified deceased individuals were handed over to their relatives, while unidentified bodies and body parts were cremated at designated locations.
Measures were taken to ensure the timely completion of death registrations for those who lost their lives and to facilitate the retrieval of lost documents and certificates for the affected individuals. The government found rental accommodations for all 794 families affected by the disaster and resettled them within various local self-governance areas. They were provided with essential food kits and furniture.
Additionally, the education of 607 students in the disaster area was resumed, with arrangements made for free transportation and study materials, the Chief Minister informed the assembly.
