As the hustle and bustle of Uthradam day’s preparations wrap up, Malayalis welcome Thiruvonam. Celebrations commence in the morning with floral decorations and Onam feasts. As the rain has abated during these days, outdoor celebrations will be all the more vibrant and lively. The tourism department has postponed Onam celebrations in Wayanad in light of recent disasters.
From Atham to the tenth day, Malayalis await Mahabali with floral arrangements. According to tradition, Mahabali is believed to visit his subjects on Thiruvonam day. The Onam feast is the main attraction of Thiruvonam. Various dishes are prepared collectively, and everyone enjoys the feast together.
The Onam festivities include the Onathoni, a special tradition where offerings and provisions are carried to Aranmula. Despite changes in times, the Onam customs continue unchanged. Onathoni arrives at the temple early in the morning.
At Thirukkakkara, the only Vamana temple in Kerala, Onam rituals begin at dawn. The ceremony includes the Vamana receiving Mahabali, who was sent to the netherworld, and the ceremonial elephant procession will take place in the morning. The famous Thiruvonam feast is also today.
In Guruvayur, the temple’s visiting hours have been extended by an hour for Onam. The temple will be open until 3:30 PM on the 22nd of this month. Yesterday, the Uthradam offerings were made, and today, on Thiruvonam day, the deity will receive the Onam attire. Besides the regular rituals, there will be special performances and festivities. A special prasadam feast for ten thousand people will be served from 9 AM.
For Onam-related rituals, the Sabarimala temple has reopened. Due to the Kannimassam rituals, devotees have the opportunity to worship the deity over the next nine days. On Uthradam, Thiruvonam, and Avittam days, all devotees visiting the shrine will be served the Onam feast.
Yesterday, the Onam feast at Sabarimala was provided by the chief priest. On Thiruvonam, the Devaswom employees will serve the feast. On the following Avittam day, the police will also prepare the feast. After the Kannimassam rituals, the temple will be closed at 10 PM on September 21st.
