Chateauroux: Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale won the country’s first-ever Olympic bronze in the 50m rifle 3 positions event at the Paris Games on Thursday, bringing India’s medal tally to three. Kusale finished third with a total score of 451.4 in the final, after having been in sixth place at one point. This achievement follows Manu Bhaker’s bronze medals in the women’s 10m air pistol and the mixed team 10m air pistol with Sarabjot Singh. All of India’s medals so far have been in shooting events. The last Indian to reach an Olympic final in a 50m rifle event was Joydeep Karmakar, who placed fourth in the discontinued 50m rifle prone event at the 2012 London Games. Kusale, who was once a ticket collector, cites cricket icon MS Dhoni as his inspiration.
