Severe Flooding Hits Telangana and Andhra Pradesh After Torrential Rain

Hyderabad/Vijayawada: Several parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are facing severe flooding due to the torrential rains that occurred on Sunday, leaving at least nine dead and disrupting rail and road traffic across the states. The heavy downpour has caused extensive waterlogging, significant damage to infrastructure, and widespread disruptions throughout the region.

Meteorologists have attributed the heavy rainfall to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which has intensified the monsoon activity. The region has witnessed rainfall exceeding 200 mm in some areas within 24 hours.

Hyderabad, The capital city of Telangana has experienced significant flooding, with major roads submerged and several localities cut off. Authorities have reported water entering residential areas and causing disruptions in daily life. Karimnagar and Warangal districts have seen severe flooding, with multiple villages affected. Emergency services have been deployed to assist with evacuations and provide relief.

In Vijayawada Heavy rains have led to rising water levels in the Krishna River, resulting in localized flooding. The city has been put on high alert, and residents in vulnerable areas are being evacuated. Coastal areas have been affected by both heavy rain and high tides, exacerbating the flooding situation. There are reports of damage to infrastructure and agricultural fields.

Based on reports from the Superintendent of Police in Suryapet and the Commissioner of Police in Khammam, who have identified these areas as the hardest hit by the recent rains, a traffic advisory has been issued. The National Highway-65 stretch from Chillakallu to Nandigama in Andhra Pradesh is currently flooded and should be avoided. Additionally, the Paleru River is overflowing onto the road at Nayakangudem on the route from Suryapet to Khammam. Moreover, a bridge has collapsed at Ramapuram X Road, just beyond Kodad town in the Suryapet district.

In case of an emergency, travelers are advised to use the following alternate routes:

  • From Hyderabad to Vijayawada: Take the route from Hyderabad to Choutuppal, then Chityal, Narketpally, Nalgonda, Miryalguda, Piduguralla, Guntur, and finally Vijayawada.
  • From Hyderabad to Khammam: Follow the route from Hyderabad to Choutuppal, then Chityal, Nakrekal, Arvapally, Thungathurthy, Maddirala, Marripeta Bungalow, and finally Khammam.

Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N. Chandrababu Naidu has instructed officials to carry out relief and restoration work on an urgent basis following the heavy rains and flooding in Andhra Pradesh. He has requested power boats from the central government to enhance rescue and relief operations. Naidu also announced a holiday for schools and colleges on September 2, Monday, and expressed hope that the rains would soon subside. On Monday, the Chief Minister visited the office of the AP Disaster Management Authority to review the impact of the rainfall and flooding with ministers and senior officials. He has authorized the use of drones and CCTV cameras to monitor the flood situation in real time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to discuss the situation in both states following the recent heavy rains and floods. During the call on Sunday, the Prime Minister assured them of all possible support from the central government to address the crisis. According to a release from the Telangana Chief Minister’s Office, PM Modi spoke with CM Reddy to inquire about the flood situation and the extent of the damage caused by the recent rain.
