High Court Orders Investigation into ‘Kafir’ Screenshot Controversy

Date:

Kochi: The High Court has directed that the source of the “Kafir” screenshot be identified. In the petitioner’s complaint, which alleges that he was falsely implicated, the court questioned why a case had not been registered. The court also pointed out that some of the individuals mentioned in the statements do not appear to have been questioned. The court instructed the police to consider including the charge of forgery in the case, as requested by the petitioner. The police informed the court that the investigation was ongoing, and the seized phones had been sent for forensic examination. The court expressed satisfaction with the progress of the investigation so far. The case has been adjourned to September 6 for further consideration.

The term “Kafir” became a heated topic in cyberspace on the eve of the Lok Sabha elections. The controversial message, circulated on social media, depicted UDF candidate Shafi Parambil as a devout Muslim and LDF candidate K.K. Shailaja as a “Kafir.” The message was allegedly spread under the name of Youth League leader P.K. Kasim. However, Kasim claimed that it was artificially created and filed a police complaint demanding an investigation into the controversial screenshot. When the police registered a case against Kasim, he approached the High Court.

So far, the police have not arrested anyone in connection with the “Kafir” controversy. While the LDF accuses Kasim of being behind the message, Kasim counters that he first saw the controversial message in a WhatsApp group named “Ambadimukku Sakhakkal.” The UDF alleges that the controversial message originated from cyber pages managed by the Left.
