New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed concern on Monday over reports of ongoing attacks against minorities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists. She stated that the interim government in Bangladesh is expected to ensure their safety.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra highlighted in a social media post that discrimination and violence based on religion, caste, language, or identity are unacceptable in a civilized society.
“The news of continuous attacks on minorities in our neighboring country, Bangladesh, is disturbing. Discrimination and violence based on religion, caste, language, or identity cannot be accepted in a civilized society,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra posted in Hindi. “We hope that the situation in Bangladesh will return to normal soon and that the interim government will ensure safety and respect for those following Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist beliefs,” she added. Her remarks come in the context of political unrest following the recent fall of the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina, during which over 500 people have been killed in widespread violence across the country.
Notably, the wave of violence has targeted Hindu communities across the nation. After Sheikh Hasina fled the country for India, numerous Hindu temples, homes, and business establishments in Bangladesh were destroyed, women were assaulted, and two Hindu leaders affiliated with the Awami League were killed.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s interim leader Mohammad Yunus has invited Hindu students and community members for a discussion. Reports indicate that from August 5, minority communities in Bangladesh have faced at least 205 attacks across 52 districts.
Several minority groups are demanding the implementation of a law to protect their rights. A Hindu student organization has even prepared an eight-point list of demands to present to Yunus.
