Rohit Sharma to Lead India Across Formats, Aims for Tournament Triumphs: BCCI Secretary Shah

Date:

New Delhi: In a decisive announcement, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit Sharma will maintain his role as India’s captain in both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Test matches. This affirmation comes on the heels of Sharma’s retirement from T20 cricket, marking a significant shift in leadership dynamics within the Indian cricket team.

Shah expressed unwavering confidence in Sharma’s leadership, predicting triumphs in the upcoming World Test Championship and the Champions Trophy scheduled for next year. “I have full faith in Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, that we will be the champions in both these tournaments,” Shah affirmed in a video message, setting high expectations for India’s cricketing future under Sharma’s stewardship.

The Champions Trophy, set to be hosted in Pakistan after an eight-year hiatus since its last edition in the UK in 2017, awaits final approval from the BCCI despite a draft schedule already submitted to the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah hinted at a potential push for a ‘Hybrid Model,’ similar to the 2023 ODI Asia Cup, where India played all matches, including those against Pakistan, in Sri Lanka.

Shah’s statement effectively dispelled speculations about Sharma stepping down from leadership roles in other formats, underscoring BCCI’s commitment to continuity and stability in team leadership. Rohit Sharma, having joined the ranks of Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the only Indian captains to clinch global trophies stands poised to guide India through upcoming challenges on the international cricket stage.
