Paris: Vinesh Phogat will not receive the silver medal. Reports indicate that the Court of Arbitration for Sport has rejected the appeal filed by wrestler Vinesh Phogat against her disqualification for failing the weight check before the Olympics final. Phogat had appealed for the silver medal. According to reports, detailed reasoning for the verdict is expected to be released later.
After being confirmed as a medal contender, Phogat was disqualified and placed last due to being 100 grams over the weight limit during the weight check on the day of the women’s 50 kg category final. Phogat appealed to the court based on her claim that she deserved the silver medal. The athlete approached the court requesting that the silver medal be awarded after the final match. Previously, the court had postponed decisions on the appeal twice.
In the wrestling competitions held over two days, weight checks are conducted twice, once each day. In the initial check before the semi-finals/quarter-finals/pre-quarter-finals, Phogat’s weight was under the 50-kilogram limit.
