Chennai: Following the release of the Hema Committee report, various sectors of the Indian film industry have demanded an investigation into sexual harassment in the industry. The Tamil film industry’s women’s association, Nadigars Sangam, announced its readiness to take strong measures against sexual misconduct faced by women in Tamil cinema. The Nadigars Sangam has decided to establish an internal grievance redressal cell to investigate complaints, with actress Rohini appointed as the head of the committee. This decision was made at the 68th General Body meeting held on Sunday.
The meeting was led by President M. Nasar, General Secretary Vishal, Treasurer Karthi, and Vice Presidents Ponvannan, Karunas, and Rohini. Nasar announced that the grievance redressal cell, formed in 2019, will be strengthened with Rohini appointed as its chairperson.
Rohini stated that since its inception in 2019, the grievance redressal cell has examined and resolved numerous issues. Recent reports, including the findings of the Hema Committee, indicate a need for a more stringent approach. “We have decided to invigorate the committee’s operations and investigations. We will address concerns effectively,” Rohini said.
The organization will provide a dedicated phone number and email address for filing complaints, urging people not to hesitate. “We will not tolerate any form of harassment and will take measures, including bans, to strengthen our stance,” Rohini added.
In addition to the disciplinary actions of the organization, the Nadigars Sangam also announced last week that it would offer legal assistance to survivors of harassment. At the same time, they advised survivors not to disclose their complaints to the media before reporting them to the organization.
