Russia Imposes $2.5 Billion Fine on Google Amid Ukraine Conflict

Moscow: One of the biggest discussions currently taking place on social media revolves around a fine imposed by Russia on Google. This amount is beyond the capability and imagination of any ordinary person. The reason for imposing such a huge fine on Google is worth knowing.

Russia has levied this fine on Google, and calling it a fine is an understatement—it’s an astronomical figure. According to CNN News, this amount is $2.5 billion. To write this, you need to place 36 zeros after the 1, which means this figure translates to $250,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

Now, thinking about converting this into Indian Rupees only increases the number of zeros. To put it simply, if you can grasp this, it’s an enormous amount, one that doesn’t exist in wealth on Earth. It is even claimed that the total GDP of the world cannot come close to this figure. The question now arises: on what grounds did the Russian court impose such a massive fine on Google? According to a report from the Moscow Times, this is happening in the context of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. In fact, Kremlin-backed and government media accounts have been banned by Google, which repeatedly refused to restore these accounts.

As a result, Russia has imposed a fine of 2 undecillion rubles on Google. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, had a revenue of $307 billion in 2023. To understand this better, 1 billion dollars is approximately 84,000 crore rupees. Therefore, according to this, Alphabet’s revenue of $307 billion translates to about 25,78,800 crore rupees. However, even with such large revenue, Alphabet can’t pay the $2.5 trillion fine imposed by Russia. Even if you combine the total revenue of giant companies like Alphabet and Google, it still doesn’t come close to this amount.
