Modi Urges Swift Justice for Crimes Against Women, Highlights Success of Women’s Empowerment Initiatives

Date:

New Delhi: On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his Independence Day speech to call for swift investigations and severe punishments for crimes against women, drawing attention to recent cases such as the rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor.

Modi emphasized the urgent need for action, stating that no delay should hinder the prosecution of those involved in such heinous acts. He stressed the importance of restoring public trust in the government and civil society by ensuring prompt justice.

While acknowledging that media coverage often focuses on rape victims, Modi criticized how perpetrators frequently escape public scrutiny. He advocated for a broader discussion on ensuring criminals face severe consequences, including capital punishment, to instill fear and deter future offenses.

In the wake of the tragic incident in Kolkata, which has sparked nationwide protests, Modi highlighted the success of women’s self-help groups. He noted that over the past decade, 100 million women have joined these groups, receiving significant financial support through banks. According to Modi, this empowerment is crucial for social transformation and increased female participation in decision-making.

Modi also praised recent policy changes, such as extending paid maternity leave from 12 to 26 weeks, which he described as a compassionate measure to support working mothers. He celebrated the progress women have made across various fields, including defense and space, and underscored the government’s commitment to a “women-led development model” that promotes innovation, employment, and entrepreneurship.
