Thirteen-Year-Old Assam Girl Seeks Education in Kerala, Placed Under District Child Welfare Committee’s Protection

Date:

Thiruvananthapuram: A thirteen-year-old girl from Assam, who left home after a dispute with her parents, is now under the care of the District Child Welfare Committee (CWC). The girl has expressed her desire to stay in Kerala and continue her studies, rather than returning to her parents. The CWC has taken responsibility for her protection. If the parents agree, the CWC Chairperson, Shanib Begum, has indicated that they are also willing to take in the girl’s two siblings. The parents have informed the CWC that they are willing to relinquish their children.

The girl and her parents will receive counseling under the CWC’s guidance for a week. A final decision will be made after detailed counseling. Following a medical examination on Monday, the girl was transferred to the Thiruvananthapuram Child Welfare Committee. She will stay there until counseling is completed. The CWC Chairperson mentioned that the girl had said her mother made her do many chores and also abused her.

The girl left home with 150 rupees taken from her mother’s purse, aiming to return to Assam. She boarded a bus from Kazhakootam and reached Thampanoor. From there, she took a train, and upon reaching Kanyakumari, she boarded another train to continue her journey. On the train, a woman bought biryani, and the girl reported that two boys attempted to take photos of her in the train’s restroom, but she stopped them and they backed off. The girl, who left home last Tuesday, was found in Visakhapatnam and arrived in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday night
