Heavy Rainfall Expected in Kerala; Orange Alerts Issued for Two Districts

Date:

Kochi: The Central Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rain across Kerala, with the possibility of strong rainfall up to 14 places. On Sunday, an Orange Alert was declared for two districts: Palakkad and Malappuram. On Monday, the alert extends to Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts, and on the 13th, the alert will include Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, and Malappuram. The state is expected to experience isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.

According to the Central Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of heavy rain with thunderstorms and strong winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kilometers per hour until the 13th. As part of the precautionary measures, the department has advised the evacuation of people from areas prone to landslides, mudslides, and flooding. The Disaster Management Authority has recommended that those living in unstable or poorly constructed homes should prepare to relocate based on upcoming warnings. Residents in vulnerable coastal areas should exercise caution as there is a risk of intensified sea intrusion. They are advised to move to safer locations if necessary.

The expected heavy rainfall in the state is a result of a high-intensity cyclone forming over the Bay of Bengal, affecting Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu by August 12. There is also a chance of more rain in central Kerala and southern districts over a short period. Current indications suggest that more rainfall is likely on the 12th and 13th. Additionally, with the arrival of favorable monsoon conditions, there is a potential for the monsoon to remain active in Kerala until the end of August, according to the Meteorological Department.
