Bangladesh Enforces National Curfew Amidst Deadly Protests; Military Deployed to Restore Order

Date:

Dhaka: Bangladesh’s government has taken drastic measures to control escalating student protests by imposing a nationwide curfew and deploying military forces across major cities. The protests, sparked by demands to abolish the quota system, have led to widespread unrest and tragic casualties.

In response to increasingly violent protests demanding an end to the quota system, which reserves 30% of government jobs for descendants of 1971 independence war veterans, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration has declared a national curfew. Military forces, supported by police and paramilitary units, have been deployed to enforce the curfew and restore order.

As of now, the protests have resulted in the deaths of at least 105 people, underscoring the severity of the situation. Authorities are actively patrolling the streets of Dhaka and other major cities, where protests have been most intense, to quell demonstrations and prevent further violence.

The unrest has also prompted concerns for the safety of foreign nationals, particularly Indian students. Efforts led by Indian authorities have resulted in the safe evacuation of 405 Indian students out of approximately 8,500 currently residing in Bangladesh. Diplomatic channels between India and Bangladesh remain open to ensure the continued safety and well-being of all foreign nationals amidst the ongoing turmoil.

Protesters argue that the quota system perpetuates discrimination and favors supporters of the ruling Awami League Party. They advocate for a merit-based system that they believe will ensure fair opportunities for all citizens in government employment.

The situation in Bangladesh remains tense and volatile as authorities continue efforts to maintain order and address the grievances fueling the protests. International attention and diplomatic efforts are crucial as the country navigates through this challenging period. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
