Washington: As the first indications of results from the U.S. presidential election start, the Republican Party under Donald Trump is showing an early lead. Trump has won in the states of Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida. Kamala Harris won in Vermont, Maryland, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The Democratic Party is leading in three states, while the Republican Party is leading in 23 states.
The first votes in the election were cast in the small town of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire. This town is known for being the first to cast votes in every U.S. election. There are only six voters in this town, and both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump received three votes each. Of the 538 electoral votes, 270 are needed to win. Currently, Kamala Harris has 117 electoral votes, and Trump has 205.
If victorious, Kamala Harris would become the first woman, the first African American, and the first Asian American president of the United States. If the result favors Trump, he would become the oldest person ever to be elected U.S. president. Along with the presidential election, elections for the U.S. House of Representatives and 34 Senate seats are also taking place.
