New Delhi: Madras IIT has once again been selected as the top educational institution in the country. According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, Madras IIT has achieved this honor for the sixth consecutive time in the overall category. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, secured the first position in the university category. This is the ninth time that IISc has retained this position.
In the overall category, eight IITs secured positions in the top ten rankings. Following Madras IIT, IISc Bangalore secured the second position. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Kanpur secured the third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively. IIT Kharagpur secured the sixth position, while AIIMS Delhi secured the seventh. IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati secured the eighth and ninth positions, respectively. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) secured the tenth position, making it to the top ten for the first time.
This year’s NIRF ranking, the ninth edition, introduced three new categories: Open Universities, Skill Universities, and Government Universities. AICTE Chairperson Anil Sahasrabudhe also announced the Ministry’s plans to start a sustainability ranking from next year. The rankings were determined based on five key areas: teaching, learning, research, professional practice, and more.
The list of higher education institutions was prepared across 16 categories, including universities, medical colleges, engineering colleges, management institutions, law schools, architecture colleges, research institutions, pharmacy, dental, agriculture, allied fields, innovation, state universities, open universities, and skill universities. This year, 10,885 higher education institutions were considered for ranking. The Ministry of Education launched the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2015 to rank higher education institutions.
