Indian Hockey Legend P.R. Sreejesh Announces Retirement After Paris Olympics

In a significant development for Indian hockey, veteran goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh has confirmed that he will retire following the Paris Olympics. The announcement comes as Sreejesh prepares for his fourth Olympic Games, aiming to leave a lasting mark on the field.

With a career spanning 18 years and 328 international caps, Sreejesh has been a stalwart of Indian hockey, playing pivotal roles in numerous historic victories. Notably, he was instrumental in India’s bronze medal triumph at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, a landmark achievement in the team’s recent history.

Reflecting on his decision, Sreejesh expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from his family, teammates, coaches, fans, and Hockey India. He emphasized his commitment to giving his best in Paris, aiming to change the color of India’s medal once again.

Throughout his illustrious career, Sreejesh has been part of several memorable victories, including gold at the 2014 Asian Games and a bronze at the 2018 Asiad. His leadership and skill were also crucial in India’s successes at the Asian Champions Trophy in 2018 and the FIH Men’s Series Finals in 2019.

Recognized for his exceptional talent, Sreejesh was honored with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021 and named World Games Athlete of the Year. He also clinched consecutive FIH Goalkeeper of the Year awards in 2021 and 2022, highlighting his dominance in his position.

Indian hockey officials, including Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey and Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh, commended Sreejesh for his outstanding contributions to the sport. They expressed confidence that his final Olympic campaign will inspire the team to strive for another podium finish, dedicating their efforts to honoring his legacy.

As Sreejesh prepares to bid farewell to competitive hockey after the Paris Olympics, his decision marks the end of an era in Indian sports, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and inspiration for future generations.
